Control page breaks and blank pages

Choose where scenes and introductory sections begin, and understand extra blank pages.

You want the rehearsal copy of The last door to have clear scene starts. For double-sided printing, you may also want sections to begin on right-hand pages.

  1. Choose Export in the app header.
  2. Expand Page flow.
  3. Turn on Scenes start on a new page for separate scene starts.
  4. For right-hand starts in a double-sided copy, turn on Scenes start on odd pages instead.
  5. Wait for the preview to update, then check the scene boundaries.

Odd-page starts also require a new page, so the new-page switch stays on and cannot be turned off while the odd-page option is active. To return to ordinary flow, turn off odd-page starts first, then turn off new-page starts.

Act headings already begin a new page after the previous section. The first scene in an act is handled with its act heading; these scene switches control later scene starts.

Odd-page alignment may insert a blank page when the next scene would otherwise start on an even page. These page-flow choices affect the PDF; they do not split or rearrange the script’s blocks.

Expand Opening pages and turn on Start each initial page on an odd page when introductory sections should begin on right-hand pages too.

This can add blank pages between the title page, introductory sections and the script. It applies to the start of each introductory section, not to every page of a multi-page cast list or contents section.

Use Show page numbers in Opening pages if those introductory pages need Roman page numbers.

Under Opening pages, choose a Blank pages count to add pages between the introductory material and the script. Choose none to remove the manually requested blank pages.

The export also balances the opening material so the script starts on an odd page. Automatic alignment can therefore add a blank page even when the manual count is none.

When the Blank pages field shows +1 beside your chosen count, one extra balancing page is being added. It is separate from the count you selected; check the complete result in the preview rather than treating that count as all the blank pages in the PDF.

Integrated score also aligns its music/score sections and can add blank pages. A filtered export that preserves pagination can leave empty areas within retained pages and keep inserted alignment blanks. Pages containing only excluded script content are omitted.

Use the preview to distinguish an intentional section break from space retained for an actor’s copy.
